William Hewett 1496-1566/7: Lord Mayor of London

This story is about power and the means whereby those who exercised it in sixteenth-century England and Wales developed and maintained their positions. Derek Hewett was researching the life of his ancestor William Hewett, Rector of Ashley in Hampshire, who was born in 1534, but this developed into a study of another, possibly related, William Hewett: Sir William Hewett, clothworker, who was born in 1496 and later became Lord Mayor of London. Derek Hewett’s researches reveal a line of priests, schoolmasters and men in service to the sovereign of the realm, who, through their loyalty and dedication, continued to provide their employers with support in those uncertain times when, nonetheless, many schools and colleges were being established to spread the new learning. The author’s discovery in Germany of the portrait of Sir William Hewett by Antonio Moro, painter to the court of Queen Mary, the subsequent purchase of it and loan to the museum of London, add a fitting conclusion to a remarkable piece of historical research.
