Sartre, Self-Formation and Masculinities

Boule explores the two elements in order to bring to the surface internal tensions and desires with the 20th-century French philosopher and so make him more contradictorily real, and therefore accessible. He traces the development of Sartre's thinking from 1950 to 1945, then focuses on his relationship with Simone de Beauvoir, and then with men and other women in terms of intimacy. By the end of the war, he says, Sartre had become Sartre, but in a postscript, he argues that he changed significantly again after 1973.
