Russia's Age of Elegance

Be the first to review this product

United under the motto "art for art's sake" and hoping to create a fine arts tradition in Russia to rival that of Western Europe at the turn of the 20th century, the Mir Iskusstva movement ("World of Art") was in essence the last flowering of Imperial Russian culture before the Socialist revolution. It was informally led by ballet impresario Sergei Diaghliev and informed by the journal Mir Iskusstva, and like much of Europe at the time, valued decorative and theatrical arts as much as painting and sculpture. This sumptuously illustrated catalog includes 140 color plates and additional color images of painted portraiture, landscape prints, costume designs, and watercolor illustrations, as well as archival photographs up to 19 x 12 inches, in a touring exhibition from the State Russian Museum.
